Dimensional Data Modeling Complex Data Type and Cumulation Day 1 Lecture

Description

In this lecture, we talk about one big table vs relational vs dimensional data modeling and their tradeoffs!

Transcript preview: Dimensional Data Modeling Complex Data Type and Cumulation Day 1 Lecture

Welcome to dimensional data modeling Day one. This is the very first lecture of the entire boot camp. In this lecture, we're going to be talking about complex data types like struct and array. You can think of array as a list in a column and you can think of struct as almost like a table within a table. So these two concepts are very important when you're trying to build more compact data. Sets when I worked at Airbnb, I was able to put these things together into an array of struct that modeled the listing availability of all Airbnbs on the platform, and we were able to shrink the data sets by over 95% and the power of this not be understated, but it also has very specific use cases because if you're using these complex data types. Have usability concerns they're harder to query they're harder to work with, but they are more compact. So knowing who your customer is and knowing who is going to be using this data when you're modeling data in this way is also critically important. If you want to learn more about how to do this stuff in the cloud, I would highly recommend joining the data expert Academy, uh, link in the description below. I really hope you enjoy the lecture today. All right, so what is a dimension, right? A lot of times like when you hear the word dimension, at least like outside of data, you think of like 3D or 2D or 4D, right?
